Statement on Antisemitism and Other Racism

Plymouth MarjonUniversity Senate approved the adoption of the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Statement on Antisemitism at its meeting of 19 June 2019. The Board of Governors endorsed this approval at the Board meeting of 13 September 2019.

The Board furthermore approved the additional inclusive wording shown in the second sentence below:  

Plymouth MarjonUniversity readily endorses the . Our opposition to antisemitism is set within the context of our equal opposition to all forms of racism and related hate crime.

In line with UK Parliament Home Affairs Committee recommendations, the Board of Governors reviewed the statement at its meeting of 19 November 2020. The Board reaffirmed its commitment to the above Statement and furthermore incorporated the following addendum:

  1. It is not anti-Semitic to criticise the Government of Israel, without additional evidence to suggest anti-Semitic intent.
  2. It is not anti-Semitic to hold the Israeli Government to the same standards as other liberal democracies, or to take a particular interest in the Israeli Government’s policies or actions, without additional evidence to suggest anti-Semitic intent.
